Bridgwater Guide

Bridgwater's cottages with hot tubs offer the perfect Somerset getaway, combining comfort with easy access to both countryside and coast. The town sits on the edge of the Somerset Levels with the Quantock Hills just a short drive away.

Trip Advisor's top attractions include the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, Bridgwater Docks and the annual Bridgwater Carnival - the UK's largest illuminated carnival that dates back to the 1600s. The Willow Man sculpture near the M5 is another local landmark worth seeing.

Bridgwater has an interesting historical connection to the Monmouth Rebellion, with the Duke of Monmouth staying in the town before the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 - the last pitched battle fought on English soil.

Cottage options range from converted barns with hot tubs perfect for couples to larger properties that can accommodate groups of 8-12. Many properties welcome dogs and you'll find everything from traditional thatched cottages to modern eco-builds with private hot tubs for stargazing.

Sightseeing

Bridgwater has loads of interesting spots to visit when you're not relaxing in your hot tub. The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal (TA6 6LS) offers lovely walks with several pubs along the route. It's open 24/7 and doesn't cost a penny.

The Bridgwater Brick and Tile Museum (TA6 3EZ) gives a fascinating look at the town's industrial past. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm, it scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. Entry is just £5 for adults.

I'd definitely recommend timing your visit with the Bridgwater Carnival (usually early November). It's absolutely massive - the procession takes over 2 hours to pass any point! TripAdvisor gives it 4.5/5 from over 200 reviews.

The Willow Man sculpture (visible from the M5) is worth a quick stop. This 40ft figure was created by artist Serena de la Hey in 2000. It's free to visit and accessible 24/7.

Pet Friendly

We've found Bridgwater really good for dog owners. The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal path gives miles of walking without having to worry about traffic. Your dog will love exploring the towpath and watching the ducks.

The Quantock Hills (20 minutes drive) offer fantastic dog walking with miles of open access land. We've never had any issues with livestock, but it's worth checking local signs.

For food, The Bower Inn (TA6 4TY) has a dog-friendly bar area and garden. They even provide water bowls and treats. The Admirals Landing (TA6 3EX) by the canal is another good option where dogs are welcome in the bar and outside areas.

Most cottages with hot tubs in the area will specify if they accept pets. Just remember to keep your dog out of the hot tub - the chemicals aren't good for them!

Bridgwater Docks (TA6 3EX) offers a glimpse into the town's maritime past. Once a busy port, it's now a peaceful spot for a walk. The restored Docks Centre has information boards explaining the history. It's free to visit and accessible all year. Grab an ice cream from the café and watch the narrowboats.

The Battle of Sedgemoor site (TA7 0LS) just outside Bridgwater marks the location of the last pitched battle fought on English soil. Is Bridgwater worth visiting?

Absolutely! While it might not have the fame of Bath or Bristol, Bridgwater has plenty to offer. The canal, docks and surrounding countryside make it a great base. Plus, the annual carnival is genuinely spectacular. With your own hot tub cottage, you've got the perfect combo of sightseeing and relaxation.

When is the best time to visit Bridgwater?

Early November for the carnival is amazing, but summer gives you the best weather for exploring the canal and countryside. Spring is lovely too - the Somerset Levels come alive with wildlife. Your cottage hot tub will be enjoyable year-round, but there's something special about sitting in it on a clear winter night looking at the stars.

How far is Bridgwater from the beach?

Burnham-on-Sea is the closest beach, about 9 miles (15-20 minutes drive) from Bridgwater. Weston-super-Mare is about 18 miles away (30 minutes). Both offer good sandy beaches, though Weston has more traditional seaside attractions.

Can you walk along the entire Bridgwater and Taunton Canal?

Yes! The canal runs for 14.5 miles between Bridgwater and Taunton, with a good towpath the whole way. It makes for a lovely day out, with plenty of pubs to stop at. You can do smaller sections if you don't fancy the whole thing.

Are there good pubs in Bridgwater?

Definitely. The Cornhill (TA6 3BU) is a traditional pub with good beer and food. The Cobblestones (TA6 3ND) has a nice beer garden. For something special, try The Bower Inn (TA6 4TY) which dates back to the 1700s and serves excellent food. All are within easy reach of most hot tub cottages.

What's the parking situation in Bridgwater?

There are several car parks in town including Angel Place Shopping Centre (TA6 3TQ) and Mount Street (TA6 3ER). Most charge around £1-2 per hour. On Sundays, the Bridgwater Town Council car park (TA6 3AR) is free. Your cottage will have parking, so you'll only need public car parks when visiting the town centre.
