St Merryn Guide

St Merryn offers a fantastic base for exploring Cornwall with the added luxury of hot tub cottages. The village sits just 3 miles from Padstow and provides easy access to seven spectacular beaches, locally known as the "Seven Bays for Seven Days".

The area boasts impressive attractions including Padstow Harbour (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and the stunning coastal paths. Constantine Bay, rated Cornwall's best surfing beach, is just a short drive away.

TV chef Rick Stein has strong connections to the area, with his Cornish Arms pub in St Merryn offering excellent food. The village was also used as a filming location for the popular TV series Poldark.

Cottages range from cosy couples' retreats to large family homes accommodating 10+ guests. Many properties feature private hot tubs, enclosed gardens and modern amenities while maintaining traditional Cornish character with exposed beams and stone walls.

Sightseeing

St Merryn puts you in the perfect spot to explore Cornwall's north coast. I always recommend starting with the village itself - the church of St Merryn dates back to the 12th century and has some fascinating historical features.

Padstow is just 3 miles away and offers a picturesque harbour (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), excellent restaurants and shops. The Camel Trail (4.8/5 on TripAdvisor) starts here - an 18-mile traffic-free path perfect for cycling or walking.

The National Lobster Hatchery (4/5 on TripAdvisor, PL28 8BL, open 10am-4pm daily) makes for an interesting visit. We found it surprisingly engaging with the chance to adopt your own lobster!

Trevose Head Lighthouse stands dramatically on the headland and offers spectacular views. The beaches around St Merryn are outstanding - Harlyn Bay (4.8/5 on TripAdvisor) is great for families and beginners learning to surf.

Pet Friendly

Many cottages in St Merryn welcome dogs, often with enclosed gardens where they can run freely. After a day of exploring, you can relax in your hot tub while your dog rests nearby.

The Cornish Arms (PL28 8ND) in the village is dog-friendly both inside and out, with water bowls provided. They even offer treats for well-behaved dogs!

Beach-wise, Harlyn Bay allows dogs all year round, while Constantine Bay has seasonal restrictions. The coastal path offers miles of walking with your dog - I suggest the route from Trevose Head to Constantine Bay for spectacular views.

St Merryn Pets (PL28 8NP) stocks emergency supplies if you forget anything. For vet emergencies, Padstow Veterinary Surgery (PL28 8EE) is just a short drive away.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in St Merryn

1. The Seven Bays - St Merryn's claim to fame is the seven beautiful beaches within easy reach. Each has its own character: Constantine Bay offers excellent surfing, Harlyn Bay is great for families and Porthcothan Bay provides rock pools for exploring. We recommend visiting at least three during your stay to appreciate their differences. The lifeguard coverage varies seasonally, so check before swimming.

2. Prideaux Place (PL28 8RP, open Sunday-Thursday 10:30am-5:30pm) - This Elizabethan manor house sits just outside Padstow and has been home to the same family for over 400 years. The house features stunning period rooms, beautiful gardens and a deer park. Visitors rate it 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor, with many commenting on the excellent guided tours that bring its history to life.

3. Camel Creek Adventure Park (PL27 7RA, open 10am-5pm daily in season) - Great for families, this theme park offers rides, animal encounters and indoor play areas for rainy days. It scores 4/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors praising the range of activities for different ages. The park gets busy during school holidays, so arrive early. After a fun-packed day, your cottage hot tub will be waiting!

Do I need a car to stay in St Merryn?

While not absolutely essential, a car makes exploring much easier. Public transport is limited, though there are buses to Padstow. Taxis are available but can be expensive and hard to book in peak season.

What's the best time to visit St Merryn?

May, June and September offer warm weather without the crowds. School holidays are busiest. If you're after surfing, autumn brings the best waves. Your cottage hot tub will be enjoyable year-round!
