Crediton Guide

Crediton, a historic market town in Devon, offers a range of cottages with hot tubs for a proper countryside break. Just 7 miles northwest of Exeter, it's perfectly placed for exploring both Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.

The town has deep Saxon roots and was the birthplace of St Boniface in 680 AD. Its agricultural heritage continues today with the popular Crediton Farmers' Market held twice monthly. According to TripAdvisor, top attractions include the impressive Gothic-style Parish Church, Crediton Museum and nearby Shobrooke Park.

Cottage options range from converted barns to traditional thatched properties. Many accommodate groups of 6-10 people, making them ideal for family gatherings. Most hot tub cottages offer private gardens and countryside views - perfect for stargazing from your tub on clear Devon nights.

TV chef Michael Caines reportedly stayed in a Crediton cottage while researching local produce for his Michelin-starred restaurant. The area's food scene has grown substantially, with several farm shops and the award-winning Crediton Coffee Company bringing visitors year-round.

Sightseeing

Crediton packs plenty of interest into a small market town. The Parish Church of the Holy Cross (EX17 2EH) dominates the town centre and opens daily 9am-5pm. It's a magnificent building with roots back to 905 AD when it was a Saxon cathedral. TripAdvisor rates it 4.5/5 from 42 reviews.

History fans should visit Crediton Museum (EX17 3LF) open Thursday-Saturday 10am-4pm between April and October. It's small but tells the town's story brilliantly through local artifacts. The volunteers know everything about local history.

Just outside town, Shobrooke Park (EX17 1DJ) offers lovely walks around its lake and woodlands. It's free to enter and the grounds are open daily from dawn till dusk. Great for a morning walk before heading back for a dip in your hot tub!

For something different, try the Crediton Farmers' Market (first and third Saturday monthly, Town Square, EX17 2AH, 10am-1pm). We've found the local cheese and Devon cider make excellent cottage snacks.

Pet Friendly

Many Crediton cottages welcome dogs and the area is brilliant for four-legged visitors. The Boniface Trail provides a 5-mile walking route with minimal road sections - ideal for dogs who need a good run.

Shobrooke Park allows dogs on leads, while Crediton's surrounding countryside offers countless footpaths across farmland and woods. I've found local farmers are generally welcoming to responsible dog walkers.

For eating out, The Crediton Inn (EX17 3JY) has a dog-friendly bar area and garden. They even keep treats behind the bar! The Three Little Pigs café (EX17 2AH) allows dogs in their courtyard area and provides water bowls.

Crediton's Tesco superstore has a pet aisle for any emergency supplies and Crediton Veterinary Centre (EX17 3BL) handles emergencies if needed. Most cottages with hot tubs have enclosed gardens - but check the fence height if your dog's a jumper!
