Cornworthy Cottages with Hot Tubs
Cornworthy Guide
Cornworthy's hot tub cottages offer a perfect South Devon escape in this small, peaceful village near Totnes. The area combines countryside tranquility with easy access to the stunning coastline, making it ideal for both relaxation and exploration.
The village sits between the River Dart and Bow Creek, providing excellent walking opportunities. Nearby attractions include Dartmouth Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and Greenway House (4.5/5), Agatha Christie's former holiday home just across the river.
Cornworthy has an interesting history - it was once home to a Cistercian nunnery founded in 1238, with ruins still visible today. The village pub, The Hunters Lodge, dates back to the 16th century and serves excellent local ales.
Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom conversions perfect for couples to larger farmhouses accommodating groups of 8+. Many feature private hot tubs overlooking the rolling Devon countryside, with some offering dog-friendly options for those bringing pets.

Sightseeing
Cornworthy itself is small but packed with character. The village church of St Peter's dates back to the 15th century and is worth a look. I recommend walking the public footpaths that criss-cross the surrounding countryside - the views across the Dart Valley are fantastic, especially in the morning light.
Dartmouth is just 5 miles away (TQ6 9PS) and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. The historic naval town has narrow streets lined with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Dartmouth Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) guards the entrance to the Dart Estuary and is open daily 10am-5pm in summer, with reduced hours in winter.
Totnes (TQ9 5NP) is 6 miles north and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. This market town is known for its alternative vibe and historic high street. The twice-weekly market (Fridays and Saturdays) sells everything from local produce to crafts. Totnes Castle (4/5 on TripAdvisor) offers great views from its keep and is open 10am-5pm daily in summer.
Don't miss Sharpham Vineyard (TQ9 7UT, 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), just 3 miles from Cornworthy. They run excellent tours and tastings of their wines and cheeses. Book ahead as they're popular, especially for the 'Trek and Taste' option which includes a guided walk through the estate before sampling their products.
Pet Friendly
Many Cornworthy cottages welcome dogs and the area is perfect for four-legged visitors. The network of footpaths around the village means you can set off on walks directly from your cottage door - ideal for morning and evening strolls with your dog.
The Hunters Lodge pub in Cornworthy welcomes dogs in the bar area and garden. They even keep treats behind the bar! After a long walk, you can enjoy a pint while your dog relaxes at your feet.
Nearby Woodlands Family Theme Park (TQ9 7DQ) allows dogs on leads in the outdoor areas, though not on rides or indoor attractions. It's open 10am-5pm in peak season and makes a good day out if you don't want to leave your dog behind.
Many beaches in South Devon have seasonal dog restrictions, but Slapton Sands (TQ7 2QP) allows dogs year-round. This 3-mile shingle beach is about 10 miles from Cornworthy and offers plenty of space for energetic dogs to run. The freshwater Slapton Ley nature reserve behind the beach has good walking paths too.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Cornworthy
1. Cornworthy Priory Ruins (TQ9 7ES) - These atmospheric remains of a 13th-century Cistercian nunnery sit just outside the village. Though not extensive, the ruins give a sense of the site's history. The gatehouse arch is the most complete structure. We found it's best visited in early morning when the light is good for photos. It's free to visit and always open as it's on public land.
2. River Dart Boat Trips (TQ6 9PS) - From nearby Dartmouth, several companies run boat trips up the River Dart. The round trip to Totnes takes about 3 hours and passes right by Cornworthy, giving a different perspective on the area. Boats run from March to October, with more frequent services in summer. One visitor told us: "Seeing Cornworthy from the river was a highlight - the cottages look like they're tumbling down to the water's edge."
3. Cornworthy Church Trail - The parish church of St Peter has an excellent self-guided trail that explains its features, including the 15th-century rood screen and unusual carved bench ends. Pick up a guide inside the church. The churchyard contains interesting graves, including some linked to local shipbuilding families. The church is usually open daily 9am-5pm.
Is Cornworthy suitable for a holiday without a car?
It's challenging. Public transport is limited to infrequent buses. The nearest train station is Totnes (6 miles). Taxis are available but need booking in advance. Most visitors find a car essential for exploring the area properly and reaching your cottage, especially if you're bringing luggage and supplies for your hot tub break.
Where's the nearest supermarket to Cornworthy?
The nearest major supermarket is Morrisons in Totnes (TQ9 5JR), about 6 miles away. There's also a Sainsbury's in Dartmouth (TQ6 9HW), 5 miles away. For essentials, the village shop in nearby Ashprington (1.5 miles) stocks basics. I suggest doing a big shop on arrival day rather than bringing everything with you.
Can I arrange grocery delivery to my cottage?
Yes, most major supermarkets deliver to Cornworthy cottages. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons all cover the area. Book your delivery slot well in advance, especially in peak season. Make sure you include your cottage name and any access instructions when ordering.
What's the best time of year to visit Cornworthy?
May to September offers the best weather for enjoying your hot tub and exploring. June is particularly good - warm but before the summer crowds. October sees beautiful autumn colours in the surrounding woodlands. Winter visits can be cosy with your hot tub steaming in the cold air, but some attractions have reduced hours.
Is there anywhere to eat in Cornworthy itself?
The Hunters Lodge is the only pub/restaurant in the village, serving good pub food and local ales. It's popular, so booking is recommended, especially at weekends. For more options, Dartmouth and Totnes have numerous restaurants. The Maltsters Arms in nearby Tuckenhay (1.5 miles) has an excellent riverside location and good food.
How warm are the cottage hot tubs and can they be used year-round?
Most cottage hot tubs are maintained at around 38-40°C, making them usable year-round. They're typically checked and cleaned between guests. Many have covers to keep the heat in when not in use. Some cottages charge extra for winter hot tub use due to higher heating costs - check before booking.
