Boscastle Guide

Boscastle is a gorgeous coastal village in North Cornwall where cottages with hot tubs offer a brilliant base for exploring. The dramatic harbour and stunning coastline make it a photographer's dream, while the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (PL35 0HD) is TripAdvisor's top-rated attraction with 4.5/5 from over 1,800 reviews.

The village gained national attention after the devastating 2004 flood when 440 million gallons of water tore through in a single day. Prince Charles visited shortly after to support recovery efforts, cementing Boscastle's place in recent British history.

Cottage stays here range from cosy fisherman's cottages for couples to larger farmhouses for groups. Many properties feature private hot tubs where you can relax after coastal walks, regardless of the weather.

The South West Coast Path runs directly through Boscastle, offering spectacular walking opportunities, while Tintagel Castle (associated with King Arthur) is just 3 miles away and scores 4.5/5 from over 6,000 TripAdvisor reviews.

Sightseeing

Boscastle packs loads of interesting spots into a small area. The natural harbour is absolutely stunning - it's a narrow inlet flanked by tall cliffs that's been used since medieval times. I recommend heading to the Visitor Centre (PL35 0HD) first, which opens 10am-5pm daily between March and October, then 10:30am-4pm in winter months.

The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (PL35 0HD) houses the world's largest collection of witchcraft-related artifacts with over 3,000 objects. It's open 10:30am-5pm April to October and scores 4.5/5 from 1,826 TripAdvisor reviews. Tickets cost £7 for adults, £5 for children.

Boscastle Farm Shop (PL35 0HH) offers fantastic local produce and a café with sea views. It's open 9am-5pm daily and scores 4.5/5 from 1,246 TripAdvisor reviews. We love their Cornish pasties - perfect fuel before walking to the Lookout Station which provides amazing coastal views.

The Wellington Hotel (PL35 0AQ) is one of Cornwall's oldest coaching inns, dating back to the 16th century. It scores 4/5 from 861 TripAdvisor reviews and serves excellent food if you fancy a night away from your cottage kitchen.

Pet Friendly

Boscastle is brilliant for dogs! Most of the beaches nearby allow dogs year-round, including Bossiney Haven and Trebarwith Strand. The South West Coast Path offers miles of walkies with spectacular views - my dog always sleeps well after a day on these trails!

The Napoleon Inn (PL35 0AG) welcomes dogs in the bar area and garden. They even keep dog treats behind the bar. Open 11am-11pm daily, they serve good pub grub and local ales.

Boscastle Farm Shop Café (PL35 0HH) has a dog-friendly outdoor seating area with water bowls provided. Their sausage rolls make great treats for tired humans after walkies!

Many cottages with hot tubs in Boscastle are dog-friendly, but always check specific pet policies. Some have enclosed gardens which are perfect for keeping your four-legged friend secure while you enjoy your hot tub.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Boscastle

The Harbour Walk is absolutely essential. Start at the car park (PL35 0HD) and follow the path along the Valency River to the harbour mouth. The walk takes about 30 minutes each way and offers spectacular views of the natural inlet. The force of the Atlantic has shaped this landscape over centuries. Continue to the Willapark Lookout Station for panoramic coastal views - on clear days you can see for miles along the coastline.

Valency Valley Gardens (PL35 0HG) are gorgeous woodland walks following the river that flooded in 2004. The National Trust has done amazing work restoring these paths. It's a peaceful spot with wildflowers in spring and summer. The walk takes about 45 minutes and is moderately easy, though can be muddy after rain. One visitor noted: "So peaceful compared to the busy harbour area, we spotted kingfishers by the river!"

St Nectan's Glen (PL34 0BG) is just 3 miles from Boscastle and features a spectacular 60-foot waterfall that punches through a hole in the rocks. It's considered a sacred site and many visitors leave ribbons and mementos. Entry costs £5.95 for adults and it's open 10am-5pm daily. It scores 4.5/5 from 1,653 TripAdvisor reviews. One recent visitor wrote: "Magical place, worth the walk through the woods. The waterfall is stunning and unlike anything I've seen before."

Is Boscastle worth visiting?

Absolutely! Boscastle offers one of Cornwall's most dramatic harbours, excellent coastal walks and fascinating history. It's less crowded than nearby Padstow or Port Isaac but equally beautiful. The hot tub cottages here provide a perfect base for exploring North Cornwall.

When is the best time to visit Boscastle?

May to September offers the best weather, with July and August being busiest. I particularly recommend June when wildflowers bloom along the coast path and the weather is typically good. Winter visits have their own charm with dramatic storms and empty walking paths, plus your hot tub will feel even better!

How far is Tintagel from Boscastle?

Tintagel is just 3 miles from Boscastle. It takes about 10 minutes by car or you can walk there via the spectacular South West Coast Path in about 2 hours.

Is Boscastle good for families?

Yes! Kids love exploring the harbour, visiting the Museum of Witchcraft and nearby beaches. However, note that Boscastle itself doesn't have a beach - you'll need to drive to Bossiney Haven (10 minutes) or Trebarwith Strand (15 minutes) for sandy beaches.

Where can I park in Boscastle?

The main car park is at the bottom of the village (PL35 0HD). It costs £4 for all-day parking. There's also a smaller National Trust car park near the harbour that's free for members.

Does Boscastle flood?

Boscastle experienced a devastating flood in 2004, but significant flood defense work has been completed since then. The village now has much better protection, though extreme weather can still cause problems. Your cottage with a hot tub will likely be well away from any flood risk areas.
