Kingsbridge Cottages with Hot Tubs
Kingsbridge Guide
Kingsbridge in Devon is a fantastic base for hot tub cottage holidays. This market town sits at the head of the Kingsbridge Estuary and gives easy access to the South Hams area.
The town offers plenty to do with Kingsbridge Farmers Market (rated 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and nearby Salcombe (just 15 minutes away) being popular attractions. The surrounding beaches like Bantham and South Milton Sands are perfect day trips.
Kingsbridge has an interesting past - it was actually the filming location for parts of 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' from The Chronicles of Narnia series. The town's quay area doubled as the Narnian port!
Cottage options range from converted barns with private hot tubs to waterside properties with estuary views. Many accommodate groups of 6-10 people, making them perfect for family gatherings where everyone can enjoy the hot tub after a day exploring.

Sightseeing
Kingsbridge sits in a brilliant spot for exploring South Devon. The town itself has the pretty Quay area where you can watch boats come and go or grab an ice cream. I always recommend a walk along the estuary path - it's free and the views are fantastic.
Salcombe is just 6 miles away (TQ8 8BU) and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. It's known for its sailing, beaches and independent shops. The ferry runs daily from 8am-6pm in summer months.
Dartmouth (TQ6 9PS, 4.5/5 TripAdvisor) is worth the 30-minute drive. The naval college, castle and boat trips make it a full day out. We found parking easiest at the Park & Ride.
For beach lovers, Bantham Beach (TQ7 3AN) is 15 minutes away and rated 5/5 on TripAdvisor. It's got great surfing, clean sand and rock pools at low tide. The car park costs £5 for the day.
Pet Friendly
Many Kingsbridge cottages welcome dogs and there's plenty for them to enjoy locally. The estuary walk from Kingsbridge to Salcombe is dog-friendly year-round and gives them a good 6-mile stretch of the legs.
South Milton Sands (TQ7 3JY) allows dogs all year, unlike some Devon beaches with summer restrictions. The Beach House café there has water bowls and treats for four-legged visitors.
The Crabshell Inn (TQ7 1JZ) on Kingsbridge waterfront has a dog-friendly section of their terrace. They even do doggy ice cream in summer! I'd book ahead as it gets busy.
If your dog loves woodland walks, head to Woodland Barton Forest (TQ7 4BB). It's got marked trails from 1-3 miles and streams where dogs can splash about. The paths can get muddy after rain so pack a towel for the hot tub cottage!
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Kingsbridge
The South Devon Chilli Farm (TQ7 2BP) is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm. It's not just about heat - they've got a showcase garden with 200+ chilli varieties and a café serving chilli-themed food. Their chocolate with chilli is weirdly addictive! One visitor wrote: "Never thought I'd spend 2 hours looking at chillies but it was fascinating. The kids loved the tasting session."
Overbeck's Garden (TQ8 8LW) sits high above Salcombe with subtropical plants that shouldn't grow in England but somehow do. The house belonged to inventor Otto Overbeck and contains his bizarre medical inventions. Open daily 10am-5pm March-October. A National Trust member told me: "The banana plants and palm trees make you feel like you're abroad, then you see the view over the estuary and remember you're in beautiful Devon."
Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum (TQ7 1DG) is housed in an old grammar school from 1670. It's packed with local history including a Victorian kitchen, old shops and farming equipment. Open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm April-October. Entry is just £4 for adults. Recent visitor feedback: "The volunteers know everything about local history and the hands-on exhibits kept our children entertained for hours."
Are there any boat trips from Kingsbridge?
Yes! The Rivermaid runs trips from Kingsbridge Quay (TQ7 1JZ) down the estuary to Salcombe. It operates April-October, costs £12 return for adults and takes about 45 minutes each way. You'll often spot seals and various birds. The skipper provides great commentary about the area's history.
Which is the nearest beach to Kingsbridge?
Slapton Sands is the closest at just 7 miles away. It's actually a shingle beach despite the name! For sandy beaches, South Milton Sands is 8 miles away or Bantham Beach is 9 miles. Both have lifeguards in summer months.
Where's good to eat in Kingsbridge?
The Crabshell Inn on the waterfront does excellent seafood. The Dodbrooke Inn is a proper local pub with great Sunday roasts. For something special, Twenty Seven by Jamie Rogers offers fine dining using local ingredients. Book all of these in advance, especially if you want to dine after using your hot tub!
Is Kingsbridge good for shopping?
Yes, it has a proper high street with independent shops rather than chains. Harbour Bookshop is excellent, as is Mangetout deli for picnic supplies. The Farmers Market runs every other Saturday morning in the town square and sells amazing local produce.
Do I need a car in Kingsbridge?
Ideally yes. While the town itself is walkable, the best beaches and attractions need driving to. There are buses to Salcombe and Plymouth but they're not very frequent. Taxis are available but book in advance, especially for evening restaurant trips after a hot tub session!
What's the best time of year to visit?
May and September offer warm weather without the summer crowds. School holidays are busiest. Winter can be lovely too - many pubs have fires and a hot tub is brilliant on a crisp December evening under the stars!
