Penruddock Cottages with Hot Tubs
Penruddock Guide
Penruddock's cottages with hot tubs offer the perfect Lake District escape, just 7 miles from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Keswick. This small Cumbrian village sits at the foot of the Northern Fells, providing easy access to both mountains and lakes.
The area boasts several top attractions including Aira Force waterfall (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) and the Rheged Centre (4/5 on TripAdvisor). Penruddock's Sportsman Inn dates back to 1656 and once hosted famous fell walker Alfred Wainwright during his mapping expeditions.
Cottage stays here range from cosy one-bedroom conversions to large farmhouses sleeping 12+. Many properties feature private hot tubs overlooking spectacular countryside views - perfect after a day's hiking.
The village's location makes it ideal for exploring the quieter eastern Lake District while avoiding the tourist crowds of Windermere. Several properties offer glamping options and dog-friendly facilities for those bringing pets.

Sightseeing
Penruddock sits in a brilliant spot for exploring the Lake District. You're right between the Northern Fells and Ullswater, so you get the best of both worlds. I always tell people to start with Ullswater - it's the second largest lake but gets half the visitors of Windermere.
Aira Force (CA11 0JS, open dawn till dusk) is a must-visit waterfall with a 65-foot drop. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and the National Trust maintains excellent paths. The woodland walk takes about 45 minutes and there's a decent café.
The Rheged Centre (CA11 0DQ, 10am-5pm daily) houses exhibitions, shops and a cinema in what looks like a grassy hill. It's got 4/5 on TripAdvisor and makes a good wet-weather option. Their ice cream is fantastic too!
For history fans, Dalemain Historic House (CA11 0HB, Wed-Sun 10:30am-4pm) sits just 10 minutes away. This pink-stoned mansion has gardens dating back to Tudor times and hosts the World Marmalade Awards each March.
Pet Friendly
We've found Penruddock brilliant for dog holidays. Most cottages welcome pets, often with enclosed gardens where they can run safely while you enjoy your hot tub.
The Sportsman Inn in the village allows dogs in the bar area and garden. They even keep treats behind the counter! Their Sunday roasts are excellent after a morning walk.
Ullswater offers miles of shoreline paths where dogs can swim. The steamer boats also allow pets on board, making for a great day out without leaving your four-legged friend behind.
Nearby Whinlatter Forest (CA12 5TW) has marked trails specifically designed for dog walking. The visitor centre provides free poo bags and water bowls - a thoughtful touch we appreciated.
If your dog needs grooming after muddy walks, Keswick has two pet shops offering wash facilities. Book ahead though as they get busy after rainy days!
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Penruddock
1. Blencathra Mountain - This distinctive fell looms over Penruddock and offers multiple routes to the summit. Sharp Edge provides a scrambling challenge for experienced walkers, while Halls Fell Ridge suits most abilities. The views from the top stretch across the entire northern Lakes. We recommend starting early (around 8am) to avoid crowds and afternoon cloud cover.
2. Hutton John Estate (CA11 0LZ) - This hidden gem just outside the village features a 14th-century pele tower and Victorian gardens. Open Thursdays and Sundays from April to September. The current family has owned it since 1734 and gives fascinating tours. Their apple orchard produces juice you can buy in the small shop.
3. Greystoke Outdoor Pool (CA11 0TN) - This community-run heated pool opens May to September and makes a refreshing alternative to your cottage hot tub! Built in the 1930s and recently restored, it's set in a lovely walled garden with picnic areas. Local residents told us it rarely gets crowded even in summer.
Is Penruddock suitable for families with young children?
Yes! Many cottages provide high chairs and cots. The Rheged Centre has an excellent indoor play area and Ullswater offers gentle lakeside walks suitable for pushchairs. The Alpaca Sanctuary near Keswick allows children to feed the animals and runs special sessions during school holidays.
What's the best time to visit Penruddock?
May and September offer the perfect balance of decent weather and fewer tourists. The daffodils around Ullswater in April are spectacular. Winter stays let you enjoy your hot tub with snowy mountain views, but some attractions have limited opening hours.
Can I get around without a car?
It's challenging but possible. The 508 bus connects Penruddock to Keswick and Penrith (where there's a train station). Taxis from Penrith station cost around £15-20. For the full Lake District experience, a car definitely helps reach more remote spots.
Where's the nearest supermarket?
Booths in Keswick (CA12 5DJ) is about 15 minutes' drive and stocks excellent local produce. There's also a Sainsbury's in Penrith (CA11 7FW). For essentials, Greystoke village shop (3 miles away) opens daily and sells freshly baked bread.
Are the hot tubs maintained during stays?
Most property owners check hot tubs every 2-3 days during your stay. They'll usually arrange this at a convenient time when you're out. The tubs are fully drained and cleaned between guests.
What should I pack for a Penruddock cottage holiday?
Walking boots are essential even for gentle strolls. Bring swimwear for your hot tub plus a torch for dark country lanes. The weather changes quickly in the Lakes, so pack waterproofs regardless of the forecast!
