Liskeard Guide

Liskeard's hot tub cottages offer a perfect base for exploring Cornwall's treasures. This historic market town sits at the edge of Bodmin Moor, giving easy access to both moorland walks and coastal adventures. Most cottages are within 30 minutes of Looe beach and the stunning South West Coast Path.

The area boasts several top-rated attractions including Siblyback Lake (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), where you can try sailing and paddleboarding and the mysterious Golitha Falls (4/5 on TripAdvisor) with its ancient woodland trails.

Liskeard has a fascinating mining heritage - it was once one of Cornwall's wealthiest towns during the copper mining boom. The Victorian novelist Charles Dickens stayed at the Webb's Hotel (now The Albion) in 1842 while researching his novel "A Christmas Carol".

Accommodation ranges from snug one-bedroom cottages with private hot tubs to large farmhouses that sleep 12+ with outdoor spa facilities. Many offer dog-friendly options with enclosed gardens, while some feature luxurious extras like wood-burning stoves and countryside views.

Sightseeing

Liskeard sits in a prime spot for exploring both Cornwall's rugged coastline and the wild beauty of Bodmin Moor. The town itself has kept much of its Victorian architecture, with the Webb's House and Foresters Hall being particularly impressive examples.

Stuart House (PL14 3AJ, open Tuesday-Friday 10am-3:30pm) is a well-preserved 16th-century townhouse scoring 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. It hosts regular art exhibitions and has a lovely tea room in the walled garden.

Just 3 miles away, you'll find Carnglaze Caverns (PL14 6HQ), an old slate mine with underground lakes that scores 4/5 on TripAdvisor. The self-guided tour takes about an hour and the constant 10°C temperature makes it a good rainy day option before heading back to your hot tub.

For railway enthusiasts, the Liskeard to Looe branch line is one of Britain's most scenic short rail journeys. The train follows the East Looe River valley, giving stunning views you can't see by road. A day return costs about £5 - much cheaper than parking in Looe during summer!

Pet Friendly

I've found Liskeard to be particularly good for dog holidays. The town has several pet shops including Paws & Claws (PL14 6AB) which stocks emergency supplies and local treats your dog will love.

Golitha Falls (PL14 6RU) offers one of the best dog walks in the area. The woodland path follows the River Fowey through ancient oak forests. The terrain is varied but there are plenty of spots where dogs can safely paddle in the shallow water.

For food, The Albion (PL14 6AF) in the town centre welcomes dogs in its bar area and even offers water bowls and treats. We've also heard good things about The Cheesewring Hotel (PL14 5LE) in nearby Minions which has a dog-friendly bar and serves good pub grub.

If you're heading to the beach, Seaton Beach near Looe is dog-friendly year-round, unlike many Cornish beaches that have summer restrictions. It's about 20 minutes' drive from most Liskeard cottages.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Liskeard

The Hurlers Stone Circles (PL14 5LE) on Bodmin Moor are just 5 miles from Liskeard. These three Bronze Age stone circles date back to around 1500 BC and are some of the best preserved in Cornwall. Park at the Minions Heritage Centre and take the short walk across the moor. The site is completely free to visit and open 24/7. One visitor wrote: "Absolutely magical at sunset when you can often have the place to yourself."

Siblyback Lake (PL14 6ER) offers activities for everyone. The 3-mile circular walk around the lake takes about an hour and has fantastic views of Bodmin Moor. The activity centre offers kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing (booking essential). There's also a good café serving Cornish cream teas. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads in some areas. One TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "Worth visiting just for the views across the water to the hills beyond."

Looe Island Nature Reserve can be reached by boat from East Looe (20 minutes' drive from Liskeard). The island is managed by Cornwall Wildlife Trust and is home to grey seals, nesting seabirds and rare plants. Boat trips run from Easter to September (weather dependent) and cost £12 per adult. Visitor numbers are limited, so booking ahead is essential. "Seeing seals swimming around the boat was the highlight of our holiday," reported one family.

Is Liskeard good for walking holidays?

Yes! Liskeard sits at the edge of Bodmin Moor with numerous walking routes directly from the town. The Caradon Trail follows old mining tramways, while the 2-mile Ladye Park walk takes you through ancient woodland. Most cottages provide OS maps and the Tourist Information Centre (PL14 4AL) offers free walking guides.

How far is Liskeard from the beach?

The nearest beach is Seaton, about 12 miles (25 minutes' drive) from Liskeard. Looe's sandy beach is 10 miles away but can take 30 minutes in summer traffic. Whitsand Bay, with its 3 miles of golden sand, is about 35 minutes by car. Having a hot tub at your cottage means you can still enjoy water relaxation even on non-beach days.

Where's the best place to eat in Liskeard?

Liskeard has several highly-rated restaurants. Tapenades (PL14 6AB) serves Mediterranean food and gets excellent reviews for its seafood. The Courtyard Deli & Café (PL14 6AF) is perfect for lunch with homemade soups and Cornish cheese platters. For traditional pub food, try The White Horse (PL14 6AA) which serves proper Sunday roasts.

Do I need a car in Liskeard?

While Liskeard has a train station with connections to Plymouth and Penzance, a car is recommended to fully explore the area. Many of the best attractions and beaches are not easily accessible by public transport. Some cottage owners offer bike hire, which is great for exploring the Caradon Trail.

What's the best time to visit Liskeard?

May and September offer the best balance of good weather and fewer crowds. July and August are warmest but busiest. Winter visits can be magical, especially with a hot tub to warm up in after exploring. The Liskeard Lights Up festival in early December transforms the town with lantern parades and Christmas markets.

Are there any hidden charges for hot tub cottages?

Most cottages include hot tub usage in their price, but some may charge extra for heating or maintenance. Always check if towels are provided specifically for hot tub use (many places provide separate ones). Some properties charge a refundable deposit to cover potential damage to the hot tub.
