Delabole Guide

Delabole in Cornwall offers excellent cottages with hot tubs for holidaymakers seeking a proper Cornish experience. This former slate mining village sits just 4 miles from the coast, making it ideal for exploring North Cornwall's beaches and attractions.

The area boasts easy access to Tintagel Castle (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) and Port Isaac (4.5/5 TripAdvisor), famous as the filming location for Doc Martin. Many cottages offer stunning countryside views where you can spot wildlife from your hot tub.

Delabole was once home to the deepest man-made pit in the world and Queen Victoria visited the slate quarry during her reign. The village maintains its authentic Cornish character without the tourist crowds of coastal spots.

Accommodation ranges from cosy one-bedroom cottages perfect for couples to larger properties for families or groups. Many feature private gardens with hot tubs, wood-burning stoves and modern amenities while retaining traditional stone walls and beamed ceilings.

Sightseeing

Delabole's central location makes it perfect for exploring North Cornwall. The village itself features the famous Delabole Slate Quarry (PL33 9AZ, open 9am-4:30pm Mon-Fri), Britain's oldest working slate quarry dating back over 500 years. You can take a fascinating tour to see how slate is extracted and processed.

Just 4 miles away is Tintagel Castle (PL34 0HE, 4.5/5 TripAdvisor), legendary birthplace of King Arthur. The dramatic coastal ruins connected by a footbridge offer spectacular views. Open daily 10am-6pm in summer, 10am-4pm in winter.

Port Isaac (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) is only 6 miles away - the fishing village made famous as Port Wenn in Doc Martin. Its narrow winding streets and whitewashed cottages are quintessentially Cornish. I recommend parking at the top of the village as the streets are extremely narrow!

Padstow (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) is 14 miles away, offering excellent seafood restaurants, boat trips and the Camel Trail for cycling. The beaches at Polzeath (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) and Trebarwith Strand (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) are within 7 miles and perfect for surfing or family days out.

Pet Friendly

Many Delabole cottages welcome dogs and the area is brilliant for pet owners. The open countryside surrounding the village provides endless walking opportunities right from your doorstep. We've found most local pubs are dog-friendly too.

The St Kew Inn (PL30 3HB) is a 13th-century pub about 4 miles away that welcomes dogs in the bar area and garden. They serve excellent food and local ales - perfect after a long walk!

Trebarwith Strand beach allows dogs year-round, unlike many Cornish beaches that have summer restrictions. The Port William pub overlooking the beach is dog-friendly and serves great food.

For supplies, Delabole has a Co-op store where you can pick up pet essentials. Many cottages provide dog beds, bowls and even treats - but check with your specific property before arrival.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Delabole

Delabole Slate Quarry (PL33 9AZ) is a must-visit. This working quarry is over 425ft deep and covers 40 acres. The visitor centre explains the fascinating history and geology and you can watch craftspeople creating slate products. They have a shop selling everything from house signs to ornaments. One visitor wrote: "Amazing to see this huge hole in the ground and learn about its history. The craftsmanship in the shop is incredible."

St Teath Church (PL30 3JT) is a beautiful 15th-century parish church just 2 miles from Delabole. The impressive tower dominates the landscape and inside you'll find interesting carved bench ends and a Norman font. The churchyard contains fascinating old gravestones, many belonging to slate workers from Delabole.

The North Cornwall Museum and Gallery (PL34 0BG) in nearby Camelford showcases local history including exhibits on slate mining, farming and fishing. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm, it's small but packed with interesting artifacts. A recent visitor commented: "What a hidden gem! Learned so much about local industries I never knew before."

Is Delabole suitable for a winter break?

Absolutely! Winter is when a hot tub cottage really comes into its own. The area is much quieter, coastal walks are dramatic and pubs have roaring fires. Many attractions remain open year-round, though some have reduced hours. The weather can be wild but that's part of the appeal - watching a storm from your hot tub is an experience you won't forget!

How far is Delabole from the beach?

The nearest beach is Trebarwith Strand, about 4 miles away. It's a beautiful sandy beach with rock pools and surfing opportunities. Other nearby beaches include Polzeath (7 miles) and Daymer Bay (9 miles). All are easily reached by car in under 20 minutes.

Are there good places to eat in Delabole?

Delabole itself has limited dining options, but the Bettle & Chisel pub serves good food. Within a short drive, you'll find excellent options including the St Kew Inn (4 miles), St Tudy Inn (5 miles) and numerous restaurants in Port Isaac (6 miles) including Nathan Outlaw's Fish Kitchen.

Do I need a car in Delabole?

While there is a limited bus service connecting Delabole to Wadebridge and other local towns, a car is highly recommended to make the most of your stay. The rural location means many attractions and beaches are not easily accessible by public transport.

What's the best time to visit Delabole?

May to September offers the best weather, but also the biggest crowds. April and October can be lovely with fewer tourists. Your hot tub will be enjoyable year-round! School holidays are always busier and accommodation prices higher.

Can I get groceries locally?

Yes, Delabole has a Co-op supermarket for essentials. For a bigger shop, Wadebridge (10 miles) has Tesco and Lidl supermarkets. Many local farm shops sell excellent Cornish produce - I recommend the Cornish Food Box Company who can deliver a hamper of local goods to your cottage.
